No more Postbank cash withdrawals at Post Office from May

Customers of Postbank will no longer be able to deposit or withdraw cash at South African Post Office branches from 1 May 2026, as the bank completes its shift to alternative service channels.

The move marks a major change for thousands of users who have traditionally relied on Post Office counters for everyday banking services.

Postbank shift to new banking channels

Under the new system, Postbank customers will access services through an expanded network that includes Standard Bank branches and ATMs, as well as participating retail outlets across the country.

Cash deposits will be available at Standard Bank branches and ATMs, while withdrawals can be made at ATMs or through cardless solutions at selected retailers.

Customers will also be able to manage accounts and access support through Postbank’s contact centre via phone, WhatsApp and email.

No change for SASSA beneficiaries

Despite these big changes, Postbank stressed that they will not affect social grant recipients.

Beneficiaries paid through the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) will continue to receive and access their grants as usual through existing channels, including retail partners and Standard Bank ATMs.

“There are no changes to how grants are paid, accessed or managed through Postbank,” the bank said.

The shift is the final phase of Postbank’s move away from SAPO branches, following the migration of social grant payments completed in 2023.

The bank also said that it has invested more than R500 million over the past three years to upgrade its systems and expand access to modern banking infrastructure.

Postbank said the new model is designed to make services more accessible and reduce the need for customers to travel long distances.

Customers who previously used Post Office branches are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the new service points and contact the Postbank call centre for assistance in locating nearby facilities.
