City of Tshwane announces 11-hour water interruption

Residents in several Pretoria suburbs will face an extended water interruption next week as the City of Tshwane carries out planned infrastructure work on Lynnwood Road in Brooklyn.

The City’s Water and Sanitation Business Unit confirmed that it will relocate an existing water pipeline on Thursday, 7 May, to improve future maintenance access and service efficiency. The scheduled work will run for 11 hours from 8:00 to 19:00.

According to the city, the relocation project forms part of ongoing efforts to maintain and improve the city’s water infrastructure network.

Pipeline relocation is planned for Brooklyn and will cause water interruptions

The City said the existing pipe currently sits in a location that makes maintenance difficult, prompting officials to move it to a more accessible area.

“The pipe will be relocated to an accessible location so that it can be convenient for maintenance purposes,” the city stated.

The teams are expected to begin work early on Thursday morning, as water supply interruptions will affect a wide range of residential and business areas in and around Pretoria East and central Pretoria.

The planned maintenance comes as municipalities across Gauteng continue to face increasing pressure to maintain ageing water infrastructure while ensuring stable service delivery.

Areas expected to experience water outages

The temporary interruption will affect residents and businesses in Arcadia, Brooklyn, Colbyn, Hatfield, Hillcrest, Menlo Park, Muckleneuk and Sunnyside.

Additional affected areas include Arcadia Extensions 8, 10 and 11, Colbyn Extensions 1 and 2, Hillcrest Extension 1, as well as Elandspoort 357-JR, Hartebeestpoort 362-JR and Koedoespoort 325-JR.

The City has urged residents in affected communities to prepare in advance by storing enough water for drinking, cooking and sanitation before the shutdown begins.

While the interruption is temporary, residents could experience low water pressure or complete loss of supply throughout the day depending on their location within the network.

City apologises for inconvenience

Tshwane acknowledged that the planned maintenance would disrupt daily activities for thousands of residents and businesses.

“The city apologises profusely for the inconvenience that may arise as a result of this scheduled work,” the municipality said.

The City has not indicated whether water tankers will be dispatched to affected areas during the maintenance period.
