Good Hope FM has confirmed the passing of one of its own, Lorenzo Darries, who died following a courageous battle with heart disease.
According to his family, Darries suffered a stroke on Monday night and passed away in hospital on Tuesday morning.
A familiar and much-loved voice on Western Cape airwaves, Darries was known not only for his vibrant on-air presence but also for his warmth, humility and passion for storytelling.
From Cape Flats to the airwaves
Hailing from the Cape Flats in Cape Town, Darries grew up in communities including Lavender Hill, Mitchells Plain and Retreat.
His journey into broadcasting began while studying at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology in 2019.
Although he did not reach the final stages of Good Hope FM’s Campus DJ Search, he left a lasting impression – one that led to him joining the station in February 2020.
A voice that resonated
Over the years, Darries became a trusted and recognisable presence on shows such as Weekend Sports WarmUp, Play-By-Play, and most recently The Great Drive.
His engaging style and authenticity earned him a strong connection with listeners across the province.
Beyond radio, he also contributed to television as a producer on S3’s Expresso, bringing the same energy and professionalism behind the scenes.
A life of resilience
Darries’ personal journey was marked by resilience and openness.
He spoke candidly about living with heart disease, inspiring many through his positivity and determination – often referring to his renewed lease on life as his “iron heart”.
Colleagues remember him as someone who uplifted others, brought laughter into every room and approached his work with unwavering passion.
Tributes pour in
Masi Mdingane, Business Manager for Good Hope FM and 5FM, paid tribute to Darries’ impact.
“It’s impossible to overstate the impression that Lorenzo left on the hearts and lives of those who had the privilege of meeting and knowing him. He gave his talent, his time, and his being to this station and to the city he loved.”
Good Hope FM extended its condolences to Darries’ family, friends, colleagues and listeners, noting that his voice and legacy will remain part of the station.
Funeral and memorial arrangements are expected to be announced in due course.
