Call for swift prosecution on 2-year anniversary of George building collapse

Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson has called on the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to move decisively following the completion of the South African Police Service (SAPS) investigation into the deadly George building collapse.

The appeal comes as South Africa marks two years since the collapse of a five-storey apartment block under construction in George on 6 May 2024 – a disaster that claimed 34 lives and left 28 others injured.

‘Justice delayed only deepens the pain’

Macpherson said the responsibility now rests with prosecutors to determine whether criminal charges should follow.

“With SAPS having completed its investigation, the responsibility now rests with the National Prosecuting Authority to take the necessary prosecutorial decisions and, where warranted, bring those responsible to court for this avoidable tragedy,” he said.

The minister described the collapse as one of the country’s most painful construction disasters in recent memory and stressed that accountability must extend to all involved parties.

“No one should be above the law – not an engineer, not a developer, not an official, nor anyone whose actions or failure may have contributed to this disaster,” Macpherson said.

“Justice delayed only deepens the pain of families who have already waited too long for answers.”

Engineer suspended after investigation

Since taking office shortly after the collapse, Macpherson said he has engaged with survivors and victims’ families while also visiting George to share findings linked to the engineer who approved the building plans.

The engineer was later found guilty of five legal contraventions and suspended.

The minister also confirmed discussions with Thembisile Simelane aimed at tightening building regulations and improving oversight mechanisms to prevent similar tragedies in future.

Remembering the victims

Marking the anniversary, Macpherson paid tribute to those who lost their lives and the emergency personnel involved in rescue operations.

“Today, we remember every life lost, every family still grieving, and every survivor who continues to live with the consequences of this tragedy,” he said.

He added that his department would continue cooperating fully with law enforcement agencies and other authorities as investigations and legal processes continue.
