Sundowns star recalls heartbreak before Sunday’s final

Sundowns face Moroccan giants AS FAR in the first leg of the CAF Champions League final at Loftus Versfeld on Sunday at 16:00, with the Masandawana desperate to avoid another heartbreaking finish after losing to Egyptian side Pyramids FC in last season’s final.

The Tshwane giants head into the match under pressure after suffering a damaging 3-2 Betway Premiership defeat to TS Galaxy earlier this week. However, Lunga believes the squad has mentally recovered and remains fully focused on the continental challenge ahead.

DIVINE LUNGA RECALLS MAMELODI SUNDOWNS’ 2025 PAIN

Speaking to the media at Chloorkop, the Zimbabwean international admitted the disappointment of last season’s final defeat remains fresh.

“I think the main focus now is on the Champions League because of how we are approaching the game on Sunday,” Lunga told journalists.

“Last season, it was so painful to end our final like that. But I think that this season we are prepared for anything. We are going to go all out and bring our A game.”

Sundowns are chasing a second CAF Champions League crown after first conquering Africa back in 2016. The club has consistently reached the latter stages of the competition in recent years but has struggled to complete the final step again.

MOVING ON AFTER TS GALAXY DEFEAT

Lunga also addressed Sundowns’ recent league setback against TS Galaxy, insisting the squad quickly regrouped after the result.

“Losing is part of football, but after the match, the coach spoke to us to pick ourselves up. I think the boys are in a good mood because I understand that in football, we win, we lose, we draw. But I think that we are going to do our best,” he observed.

Sundowns will be hoping to build a strong advantage at home before travelling to Morocco for the decisive second leg next week.
