A report by the Parliamentary Budget Officer (PBO) this week shows the alarming costs of co-hosting the International Federation of Association Football (known by its French acronym FIFA) Men’s World Cup have risen to more than $1 billion. Almost half of that — $473 million — is coming from the federal government. The rest will be financed by provincial and municipal governments. That’s an eye-watering $82 million per game.
