Another bomb threat at Wynberg Girls’ High School

A bomb threat at Wynberg Girls’ High School in Cape Town last Friday caused little disruption to ongoing examinations after police declared the premises safe following a thorough search.

The school received a telephonic bomb threat on Friday morning and immediately evacuated all learners and staff as a precautionary measure.

Responded swiftly

Members of the South African Police Service (SAPS), assisted by the Bomb Squad and K9 Unit, responded swiftly and conducted a comprehensive sweep of the school grounds.

Following the search, authorities declared the premises safe shortly before midday, allowing examination activities to resume.

SAPS confirmed that a case had been opened at Wynberg police station after the threatening call was received.

However, no suspicious items were found during the operation.

Praised the way the situation was handled

The incident marks the third bomb threat reported at the school since November last year.

In all three cases, no explosives were discovered and no injuries or damage were reported.

Western Cape Education Department (WCED) spokesperson Bronagh Hammond praised the calm manner in which the situation was handled.

She commended learners for remaining composed during the evacuation, while also acknowledging the professionalism of school staff and the support provided by emergency services and law enforcement officials.

Criminal offence

The WCED reiterated its concern over false threats and warned that such actions are criminal offences.

The department urged members of the public to refrain from making hoax threats, stressing that these incidents cause unnecessary anxiety, disrupt teaching and learning, and place pressure on emergency response resources.

Police investigations into the source of the threat are ongoing.
