Huge multi-national comes to AID South African flood victims

A huge multi-national corporation has come to the aid of South African flood victims. As The South African reported last week, severe flooding took place across the Free State, Northern, Eastern and Southern Cape last week.

Unprecedented rain transformed streets into rivers and severed road access to dozens of communities overnight. These rapidly rising water levels displaced thousands of families, prompting a rapid humanitarian response. Enter Ford South Africa and Ford Philanthropy, in union with Gift of the Givers.

In Thabong, Welkom, flash floods affected more than 12 000 residents and damaged over 3 400 homes. The situation was equally dire in the Northern Cape, where floodwaters isolated nearly 2 000 families across 82 cut-off areas near Kuruman. These needy residents were unreachable by road for days.

In response, Ford Philanthropy partnered with Gift of the Givers to coordinate and fund relief efforts across the affected regions. Brave teams navigated damaged roads and deep mud to deliver aid to families in Upington, Karos and Leerkrantz. When conditions worsened and ground routes disappeared entirely, the partnership expanded its efforts into the air.

SANDF AND SAPS ASSISTANCE

Working alongside the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and the South African Police Service (SAPS), helicopters were deployed to reach the most isolated communities. Food parcels, bottled water, blankets and emergency supplies were airlifted to families who had been stranded for days.

On the ground, Ford contributed additional vehicles and volunteers to support Gift of the Givers. Mary Culler, President of Ford Philanthropy, emphasised that the response reflects the organisation’s broader commitment to community resilience. “Ford is about more than just writing a cheque. Ford puts the full power of our employees, dealers and vehicles behind the support of our partners,” Culler said.

Soon, weather warnings escalated to Level 10 in parts of the Eastern and Southern Cape. Further warehouses in Johannesburg and Cape Town were mobilised, with emergency stock dispatched to Buffalo City, Nelson Mandela Bay and surrounding districts. Search and rescue teams were also placed on standby in coordination with Disaster Management and local municipalities.

The amazing response highlights how a large multi-national corporation like Ford South Africa, relief organisations like Gift of the Givers and government can swiftly combine resources during a crisis.
