‘I lost my respect for Lebohang Maboe’ – Ex-Pirates striker

Former Orlando Pirates striker Phumudzo Manenzhe reportedly said he lost respect for Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Lebohang Maboe following a controversial incident in the Soweto Derby.

The moment occurred during Sunday’s 1-1 draw between Amakhosi and the Buccaneers at the FNB Stadium.

Maboe appeared to step on Relebohile Mofokeng while the Pirates youngster was on the ground after being fouled.

Mofokeng had initially been brought down by Siphesihle Ndlovu, sparking a brief scuffle between players.

Amid the chaos, Maboe seemed to make contact with the grounded attacker, an incident that went unnoticed by referee Abongile Tom, who only penalised Ndlovu for the original foul.

Speaking as an analyst on SuperSport TV, Manenzhe did not hold back in his assessment.

“Lebohang Maboe lost my respect for what he did to Rele Mofokeng,” the former Pirates striker reportedly said.

“I’ve watched Maboe over many appearances for Mamelodi Sundowns and always rated him as a technical, ball-playing midfielder. But for him to stamp on a youngster while he’s on the floor, it’s uncharacteristic.

“I also don’t think the referee managed the game well. There were several tough tackles, and missing that moment was a big call.”

Pirates fans wanted Maboe punished

The incident divided opinion among fans. While many Pirates supporters were angered, others felt the contact may have been accidental.

Adding to the speculation, Maboe took to Instagram on Monday, posting a picture of himself interacting with Pirates star Mofokeng during the match, possibly suggesting there was no malicious intent behind the incident.

Was Maboe malicious?
