Injury blow and missed chances cost Pirates, says Ouaddou

Orlando Pirates walked away from FNB Stadium with a point, but there was a feeling inside the camp that more could have been taken from the Soweto derby against Kaizer Chiefs. The 1-1 result was hard-fought, but not fully satisfying for the Buccaneers.

The game itself was physical from the start, with both teams battling for control in midfield. Pirates struggled to impose their usual rhythm early on, while Chiefs made it clear they were ready for a direct, aggressive contest.

Despite moments of pressure and attacking intent, Pirates found it difficult to create clear chances in the first half. The flow of the game was disrupted, and duels in the middle of the park became the main story.

ORLANDO PIRATES FEEL THE IMPACT OF EARLY INJURY

One of the key turning points came with the injury to Tshepang Moremi, which forced an early change and affected Pirates’ attacking balance and speed in transition.

“Look, we lost a very important player and they knew it was threat in terms of speed so the opponent kicked him in the ankle, but we bring Tito,” Ouaddou told SuperSport.

“I think he did well, he did his maximum to play and try to create some chances to give some assist to his teammates. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough.”

KAIZER CHIEFS MIDFIELD BATTLE SHAPES THE GAME

Pirates also found it tough to win control in midfield, with Kaizer Chiefs matching them physically and slowing down their build-up play.

“Look, we expected a tough game, when you see the line-up especially in the middle, we knew that they will not come trying to play maybe to be well organised compact, but very physical duels it’s what we had,” Ouaddou told SuperSport after the game.

“I think in the first half, I thought we were really nice with the duels we didn’t win too much duels, we didn’t win too much duels, we didn’t start the game like we wanted, we didn’t create a lot of chances like the other games we have played.”
