The good news is June 2026 SASSA Old-Age Grants will go ahead as scheduled next month, despite President Cyril Ramaphosa’s latest intervention. Unbelievably, after months of uncertainty and delayed payments, next month’s grants looked like they would finally proceed without incident. Until Minister of Social Development Sisisi Tolashe was unceremoniously fired this week …
Nevertheless, barring any unforeseen incident, June 2026 SASSA Old-Age Grants will be paid on a conventional four-week cycle. Therefore, more than four-million beneficiaries can expect payment on Tuesday 2 June 2026. As per April’s increases, SASSA Old-Age Grants for 60 to 74 years old receive R2 400 (R80 up from R2 320). While SASSA Old-Age Grants for 75 years and older receive R2 420 (R80 up from R2 340).
JUNE 2026 SASSA OLD-AGE GRANTS

However, June 2026 SASSA Old-Age Grants will rollout despite severe background politics at the South African Social Security Agency. Minister Sisisi Tolashe was fired on Thursday 14 May 2026. In the interim, Sindisiwe Chikunga, Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, has been appointed as acting Minister of Social Development. Tolashe faced mounting allegations of corruption, misconduct and misuse of public funds.
Most notably, her failure to declare two luxury Chinese SUVs valued at nearly R1 million, allegedly donated to the ANC Women’s League (ANCWL), but registered in her child’s name. Moreover, Ramaphosa issued a written rebuke to Tolashe back in March 2026 after initiating disciplinary proceedings against the department’s director-general without presidential approval. Both the DA and ActionSA laid criminal charges against Tolashe for allegedly misleading parliament, too.
OUTLOOK APPEARS STABLE FOR JUNE 2026 SASSA OLD-AGE GRANTS
Of course, the optics of a department being led by someone of questionable standing that oversees R300 billion in social welfare doesn’t look great. However, despite these unwanted challenges, the immediate outlook appears stable for June 2026 SASSA Old-Age Grants. And government is even talking about expanding free electricity for SASSA beneficiaries in a bid to offset rampant fuel price increases that have seen diesel go well beyond R30 per litre.
In the meantime, the agency continues to prioritise targeted reviews and the SASSA eLife Certification process. It says this must be now done annually so the agency doesn’t accidentally withhold or cancel grant payments to recipients it can no longer contact. Better still, SASSA’s long-dormant online service portal is back up and running, so it can be done online. Nevertheless, the now-defunct minister promised parliament that SASSA would save R3 billion over the next two years by tightening its administrative processes.
